Lily was out of breath when she got to the tower but she stopped for a second at the door, remembering when she’d danced with James for what felt like forever here. It had been lovely and if anything made her more excited for whatever he had planned now.
On a table across the room, her cloak was folded under her gloves and another card. On the back of the chair was a Gryffindor scarf and before she’d even pulled it on she knew it would be his. Wrapping it around her neck, Lily breathed in heavily and let James’ scent fill her nose. She stood like that for longer than she should have before she remembered the card and pulled it open. The kitchens? Why did she need her cloak for the kitchens? Nevertheless, Lily tucked the thick material over her arm, put her gloves in the pocket and made her way down the the very bottom floor.
She was warmly greeted by a gaggle of excited house elves who thrust the card at her and barely gave her a second to read it before they were shooing her out of the door and onto the grounds. Lily tugged her cloak on and knew where she was going. Clutching the candle in her hand, she ran across the grounds as fast as she could, not bothering with the wind messing up her hair and making her eyes stream.
There was James, leaning back against the tree and looking far more gorgeous than she had remembered from a few hours ago. “Merlin-” she started, a little out of breath, “You might be the most wonderful person alive!”
“I know,” James replied in his usual cocky manner, running a hand through his hair and grinning at her. Secretly he was glad she approved, because really all he’d done was make her run about the castle pointlessly. He gestured with a hand at the picnic laid out for them.
“I don’t suppose you’re a little hungry after all the running?” he asked casually, pushing himself up and away from the tree in order to press a soft kiss to her lips. “Happy Valentine’s Day, love.”
He grabbed her hand and pressed into it a small box, even as he pulled her down to sit with him. He reached for the wine and poured them each a glass as she opened her present.
